Biodegradable Products Institute (BPI)

BPI is the certification authority for U.S. compostable products. Both BPI and the US Composting Council (USCC) recognize ASTM D6400 and ASTM D6868 as the standard for third party testing.

American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM)

ASTM is a rigorous set of test requirements that determine the compostablity of a given product. BioTuf products fall under two ASTM categories: ASTM D6400 and ASTM D6868.

ASTM D6400

This specification covers plastics and products made from plastics that are designed to be composted in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities. This specification is required to determine if plastics and products made from plastics will compost satisfactorily. The purpose of this specification is to establish standards for identifying products and materials that will compost satisfactorily in commercial and municipal composting facilities.

ASTM D6868

This specification establishes the requirements for materials and products (including packaging), wherein a biodegradable plastic film or coating is attached (either through lamination or extrusion directly onto the paper) to compostable substrates and the entire product or package is designed to be composted in municipal and industrial aerobic composting facilities.
